In the Orders Office of Chunkbix Ltd., it is decidedly Mr. Price Hargraves who gives the orders and little Mr. Bloome who obeys them, until Mr. Bloome is astonishingly accused of chasing a young female across the Common. To his and Mr. Price Hargraves’ amazement this reprehensible conduct makes him the hero of every woman and girl in the office, even Price Hargraves’ hitherto devoted secretary and the formidable chairman, Lady Chesapeake. So glorious is Bloome’s transformation, that when the young person in question discovers she has made a mistake in her identification, Bloome is the reverse of pleased and determines to keep her quiet.

Two couples - one married, one not - find themselves stranded overnight in a farmhouse in Devon under the watchful eye of the garrulous farmer's wife and the taciturn farmer. Reduced to reading magazines about duck husbandry, their releationships unravel and then knit together again. Will love triumph over old-fashioned morality, or will an accommodation be found?

Emma Hornett, a domestic tyrant, domineering, house-proud, self-righteous to a fault, continuously bullies her ferret-fancier husband Henry and his live-in spinster sister, Edie. Worst of all, she is not amused when her precious daughter chooses orphan sailor Albert Tufnell as a prospective husband… Further complications arise for Albert, when due to a misunderstanding, Shirley suspects him of having a flirtation with her bridesmaid, and for the first time poor Albert becomes aware that there is a good deal of her mother in his bride.
